We often work with the old Vermont Greens and Purples, Reds and Sea Greens and even Gray and Black Slate that are still in abundance and last for many decades. We source reclaimed slate whenever possible because the new slate is not an attractive match as it lacks the patina gained over the many years in service. Basically, as long as the nails will hold them, the Vermont Slate will last sometimes upwards to 200 years. The finest slate in the world is the Peach Bottom slate but the quarries are all done and only the finger lakes remain. Pa Blacks are not as formidable and the life cycle on them varies based upon the slope and direction of solar impact. We repair what makes sense and we recommend replacement only when it is in your best interest.
