The asphalt roofing shingle industry has sunken to new lows. No longer are chalk lines routinely used to keep shingles straight. No longer is a straight edge commonly valued in the industry. No longer is the exposure of the shingle carefully checked by your average ?roofer.? Nailing of the shingles is no longer regarded as important by many ?roofers? as long as there are enough of them used. Placement of the nails is often overlooked! Nails often fall right in the slots (or butt joints) of the shingles! Roofers either don't care anymore or they don't know any better! See photographs below. We are seeing this on just about every roof we inspect!
Improper nail placement is becoming more common! Nail guns have made novices nail faster and the results are in: Leaky Roofs!
Note: Nail Placement is almost never inspected, even by manufacturer warranty representatives.
Who is to blame? Manufacturers are to blame. "Roofers" are to blame. Inspectors are to blame. Homeowners beware! Yes you must check out the quality of the installation because no one else will do it for you! Do not deal with the low ball bidder! You even have to watch the big names in the industry. Factory certified roofers are the worst! Factory certifications mean nothing but that you are dealing with a volume roofer.
