The approach that may work for a home built in the last twenty years may be the wrong approach for an historic structure.  Much different were the construction methods, the materials and the architectural themes of yesteryear. From a mechanical standpoint, and to start with the raw materials used up until the mid-twentieth century, a change occurred around the mid-1980’s that should always be realized.  The post WW-II “New Growth” lumber began to arrive onto the scene.  This lumber was produced in several decades aided by scientific means to compensate for the losses of forests in the baby boom era.
