Allentown, Bethlehem, Easton Roofing Repair Company |
|
|
|
|
Allentown, Lehigh County, Pa. has many historic and beautiful structures of wood and stone that require the care of seasoned craftsmen of the trades of Roofing, Siding, Carpentry and Masonry. These buildings stand because they were built by caring settlers and good custodians of resources. |

Our
Company has seen three decades of growth and change within
an industry frequented by transients. In Allentown and the surrounding areas and within the Roofing trades, in particular there has developed a stigma that many prudent
consumers take seriously. As the economy goes through
its waves, so does the Roofing Contracting
Business in Lehigh County, Pa., as in other parts of the region,
constantly flexes with influxes and mass departures of contractors
that enter and leave these fields of endeavor, rarely staying long enough to become the truly astute craftsmen
required to effectively provide the level of service
required on Lehigh County’s historic properties. |

We have bucked many of the modern industry trends when they are detrimental to our clients' interests. The modern house wrap mentality is just one example of a modern trend gone amuck. We have endeavored to educate our clients on Roofing, Siding, Windows, Masonry and the building trades and issues of concern. The understanding of the historic significance of a given old-world methodology is to appreciate not only the mechanical reasons for certain applications, but the architectural statement made by the builder. We always endeavor to complement the original theme of a building, whether it is a twenty year old tract home, or a two hundred year-old carriage house.

Period accuracy is a very important
aim when reviewing a project for recommendations on
Roofing work in or
around Allentown, Lehigh County, Pa.
So many of these structures have had their architectural themes ripped from them in an effort to “upgrade” modern methods and products onto them.
Another
very important consideration is the current condition
of a modern dwelling and the aspects of modern heating
and cooling that may have impacted upon the structure.
Our way of life and energy consciousness of today
has caused some methodologies to come to the fore
without proper testing. One of these enigmas
is (what we call) the “house
wrap” mentality which is an answer to the mechanically
incorrect, modern exterior claddings of the day and
the leaks they cause. Another well-meaning
arrival that has grown to acceptance and abuse is Ice
& Water Underlayment. (Also see "Phantom
Leaks") |

The approach that may work for a home built in the last twenty years may be the wrong approach for an historic structure. Much different were the construction methods, the materials and the architectural themes of yesteryear. From a mechanical standpoint, and to start with the raw materials used up until the mid-twentieth century, a change occurred around the mid-1980’s that should always be realized. The post WW-II “New Growth” lumber began to arrive onto the scene. This lumber was produced in several decades aided by scientific means to compensate for the losses of forests in the baby boom era.

A tract home (or builder’s subdivision home) aged twenty years is a totally different entity than that of the century-plus historic structure. Actually, the newer home is more vulnerable to rot because of the materials used and to add to the problem is an industry bent on the indiscriminate use of an exterior barrier that leads to accelerated rotting of the wood that is known as “New Growth.” In an industry that is clouded by the “Tin-Men” of today, there is real damage that can arise from improper installations. Allentown and Lehigh County has some wonderful structures that require Roofing, Siding and Masonry work in the normal chain of upkeep.

Knowledge is keen in an industry driven by manufacturers’ specifications in the absence of sound direction from out-dated building codes. Manufacturers, far removed from the realities of the craftsmen, and geared toward profit, are looked upon for the answers when the answers lie in the fields of endeavor where we reside, here in Lehigh County, Pa., with a few craftsmen left in a transient industry. We truly design every job for performance, aesthetics, and permanence.
