CIRCULAR (ROUND) PORTICO COPPER GUTTER RE-LINING |

The image above was taken upon completion of a Circular Gutter reconstruction and re-lining project in South Orange, NJ. Built-In Gutters present many challenges with the construction having to be sloped within a grade that is hidden by the level soffit below. |

With a round system that had been rotting for years, it was most challenging to restore the cornice to original condition onto new supporting framing. With a circular Portico roof that has a ½ circumference of 24 feet, and set limitations as to the allowable slope, the construction of the grade had to be precise.
Within a 3-1/2” allowble slope with which to work, the run around the outside measurement of the ½ circle Portico was 0.145834” or a little more than an eighth of an inch drop per foot of run. This rate of slope for a normal gutter would be too much, but with the given element of curve that exhibits limitation on the flow, the slope was just right for this installation.
Keeping the substrate perfectly sloped in the construction was mandatory so that the completed gutter would not have puddles after a rain. The pans had to be fashioned and seamed at 12” intervals to allow field fabricated “box” guttering to follow the curve of the Portico.
Solder joints of 50/50 (tin/lead) were employed for permanence. The roof shedding into the copper Built-In Trough was constructed of a two ply SBS Modified Bitumen roofing system. |
