of this home dates back to 1703. An addition was added in the
late 1700's. Located in Skillman, NJ, near Princeton, Blawenburg,
and Hopewell, on the olde main drag, it could have a story to tell.

Folk Victorian Era: Usually near the old railroad tracks in the old towns across the northeast, one can find the old farmhouses that were dressed with the Victorian artistry of the opulence of the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. It was when the railroad afforded folks an easy ride to big city and a good look at the Victorian era architecture. These travelers would return and carry out a building project with the simplicity of a farmhouse....

Wonderful old Folk Victorian Still possessing all of its original charm and unique details, this wonderful expression of architecture was brightened, polished, and made energy efficient without losing any of its originality and splendor. The Plaster of Paris Greek / Ionic style Capitols were reportedly added years ago by a prior owner. It is unclear as to style the orignal Capitols or Column Heads. Also featured below.. |

The Garage on the property was a mid-twentieth century detatched structure, but it was improperly constructed and was ready to collapse. We demolished the original structure and created a "Folk Victorian" Garage. |

This charming Folk Victorian had Asbestos Reinforced Cement Shingle Siding from the cover-all days of the mid-20th century. Under the shingles was the original wood siding that covered empty walls. Like the Whitehouse Station home, we removed the siding and installed batt and rigid insulation, with solid sheathing on the walls. A Beaded Cedarmill James Hardie Siding was then installed. The Period Cornice of Old Growth Wood was retained and re-finished. A new Roof was installed and a Garage was torn down and rebuilt.

Original blueprints were made available by Church staff. A plan was devised including custom sized Andersen Flexiframe Windows. Sills were to be rebuilt straight with an outward slope to provide a true watershed away from the openings of the windows. Project has been in service for years. Leaks are no longer a problem. |

At 17 years young, this home was looking ragged. Cedar was
not an option because today's hybrid, fast growing, immature
woods don't hold the natural oils they once did. They decay
rapidly and they are expensive. Hardiplank by James Hardie
was the answer with a 25 year warranted coating and a 50 year
product warranty from James Hardie.

Condition: The existing wood on this home was painted with
high quality latex, forming and impermeable and non-breathing
envelope. Warm, moist air migration through the walls meeting
the last barrier (the latex paint) condensed in colder weather
forming water sacks on the exterior behind the new paint.
Solution: Provide a breathable exterior that will weather
for a lifetime and be maintenance free for the next quarter
century. We removed the old wood siding and installed pre-finished
Certainteed Weatherboards Siding in Beige. |
